When the seas rose and claimed the world that once was, humanity did not disappear, it transformed.
From the vast ocean emerged colossal coral formations, ancient and unyielding, rising above the waves like monuments of a forgotten age. Upon these living giants, people built their lives, shaping a new civilization defined by resilience, memory, and the rhythms of the sea.
Created for the Huion “Water World” Art Contest, this project explores a world suspended between loss and renewal, where generations have grown atop the reef, guided by tradition and bound to the ocean that both destroyed and sustained them. At its center lies a turning point: the long-awaited return of explorers once thought lost, carrying with them a discovery that could alter the fate of this coral-bound society.
My submission for this challenge was awarded 1st place, and this page presents a full breakdown of the project—from early concept development and worldbuilding to the technical execution and final presentation.
Through this piece, I aim to capture not just an environment, but a moment, where wonder, uncertainty, and possibility converge at the edge of a changing world.

Wonder swept the coral city like a rising wave. Voices, drums, and movement filled the living stone as the people gathered, spilling across ledges and bridges grown from the reef itself. In ritual and celebration, they welcomed the explorers home, not merely as survivors of the sea, but as bearers of something far greater. They had returned as messengers who carried astonishing news, news that would echo far beyond the coral towers and into the fate of the drowned world.
When the seas rose and devoured the world that once was, humanity did not vanish, it ascended. From the endless blue emerged colossal corals, ancient and immense, lifting their vast stone-like crowns above the waves as if the ocean itself had spared them. Upon these towering giants, hard as cliffs and alive with slow-growing strength, people carved out a future. Generations passed on those coral heights, bound by shared memory and ritual, guided by a queen whose word carried across the reef like a tide-bound law.

Process
- Ideation
- Reference gathering and sketch exploration to define mood, scale, and narrative direction.
- Blockout & Look Development - Blender
- Scene built and iterated in Blender. Explored multiple camera angles and compositions to establish the strongest read and focal hierarchy.
- Sculpt - ZBrush
- Primary coral structures sculpted in ZBrush, focusing on organic form, variation, and large-scale readability.
- Characters - Marvelous Designer / Character Creator / Substance Painter
- Character assets created with Marvelous Designer (cloth simulation) and Character Creator (base meshes), then fully textured in Substance Painter for realistic materials and surface detail. Ensured natural integration into the environment.
- Lighting & Rendering - Blender
- Final lighting setup and rendering completed in *Blender* to establish mood, depth, and atmosphere.
- Paintover & Photobash - Photoshop
- Final image refined in *Photoshop* through photobashing and paintover to enhance detail, unify elements, and push cinematic quality.
- Final Polish
- Color grading and value adjustments to reinforce composition, depth, and visual impact.
The characters are inspired by African tribal aesthetics, celebrating vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and symbolic accessories. Their costumes feature layered fabrics, bold prints, and dynamic textures that reflect cultural heritage while adding visual richness to the scene.
Accessories, such as beads, jewelry, and ceremonial adornments, enhance individuality and storytelling, emphasizing status, role, and connection to the coral society. The combination of vivid garments and detailed ornamentation creates a striking contrast against the natural tones of the coral environment, reinforcing both identity and atmosphere.
